WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Mike Michaud praised the announcement of the U.S Department of Agriculture (USDA) that the City of Brewer will receive a $1,775,000 loan and a $1,375,000 grant for water system improvements.  The project in Brewer is one of nine water and environmental projects announced today that is being funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA, H.R. 1).

“Cities and towns throughout Maine have benefitted greatly by USDA water system investments.  This federal support is essential because Maine’s water infrastructure is aging,” said Michaud. “Many communities must begin to increase investment in the repair and replacement of water infrastructure in order to protect public health and to maintain environmental standards.  The resources made available today will benefit area residents by creating jobs and making important investments in their water system.”

The ARRA funding announced today is being administered by USDA Rural Development’s Water and Environmental Program, which provides loans and grants to ensure that the necessary investments are made in water and wastewater infrastructure to deliver safe drinking water and protect the environment in rural areas.  Funding of individual recipients is contingent upon their meeting the terms of the loan or grant agreement.
